Marc, I'm using one of those from a competitor but similar technology.
great LED technology, requires quite a dark room and not good enough to play a movie or xbox, et.c
Good enough for presentation with a small workgroup though. best used while powered, not on batteries.

Have a look at the REDFLY, which brings a laptop experience to the smartphone and fully anticipates to the smartphone's ability to go beyond PIM and email.
Already today there is a large group using either mobile apps (eg Salesforce.com Mobile, Vettro, O4 Corporation) or Citrix running in-house business applications on the smartphone.

I don't think there is any confusion over the definition of laptops and smartphones, you seem to be comparing functionality when this is about device format. "Phones need to fit into your pocket, have no fans and need to run for days not hours"

Todays laptops are over powered and only run for a few hours without charging, have an expense operating system and I also need about 5Kgs of stuff to access my corporate and personal applications / data.

Todays phones combined with a bluetooth keyboard and external screen (checkout the Nvidia APX 2500 chipset) can provide all the computing power required. I can access the processing power of the cloud, provided by Google, Microsoft, Amazon ....... and it's free.

I'm just waiting for a vendor to release a 'Smarterphone' with video projector, HDMI output and projected keyboard. This phone will doc with my car, hotel, home and also act a as coffee mug warmer.

We could have said SmarterPhones to over take laptops, but either way, the laptop device format has had it's day ;-)

Great headline but I suppose it depends on largely on everyone's definition of the devices involved...

Have you tried to buy a phone these days that doesn't include PIM capability, Email and most likely web browsing too? Once we tended to refer to Smartphones as the domain of the Blackberry and Windows Mobile (Maybe the Nokia E series too). Obviously Apple and Google have joined the fray - allegedly in the business market but the biggest impact on device sales these days appears to be the consumer...

IDC released a report indicating that laptop sales are going on a skijump by 2012 and the traditional desktop would get squeezed by alternative client architectures. I see evidence of business looking at replacing desktops with flex, laptops or companion devices but I think as an overall percentage, the biggest change is being driven by the consumer who is now buying **multiple** laptops for the family home in preference to a **single** traditional desktop.

It will be interesting to see if the consumer trend continues in the light of the current economic situation.

Smartphones overtaking laptop sales? Maybe - especially if you consider nearly every phone you buy could be classified in that way!

Nice to hear from you by the way!
